Ink pen shaped like snake

The world of puzzles can seem so broad and varied that it’s hard to believe there are any ways left to manipulate words, grids, and logic to create a new brain-teaser. Yet puzzle creator John Mansfield has done just that, with the launch of Clueless Snakeword.

This new puzzle is a variation on Snakeword, which will be familiar to regular readers of Take a Puzzle magazine, where answers snake around a grid in one long chain. This version, however, is ‘clueless’, and so solvers must rely on logic alone to determine the order of the answers and where to fit them all into the puzzle grid.

There are currently three Clueless Snakeword books available, at Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels of difficulty. Try out the example puzzle below, to see if you’re ready for this exciting new challenge.

Fit all of the words into the puzzle grid. Words must fit from one grey square to the next changing direction by 90° every time a vowel is used. The last letter of each word forms the first letter of the next word so a long interconnected snake of words is formed. The first word must start from the no 1 square and the last letter of the final word must be in the starred square.
